Innovative Ways to Create Your Own Kitchen Curtains

It’s not necessary to buy a pattern for kitchen curtains (or curtains for any room) because they are the easiest projects to make with an electric sewing machine!

Stores offer an abundance of fabric choices, but there may already be some perfect materials close at hand. For example, sheets make excellent summer curtains. First, cut the sheet in half horizontally. The end of the flat sheet that goes under the pillow already has a seam, so by flipping the end of the sheet to that seam and sewing across that seam, a rod pocket is made. There is no need to finish off the sides, but the bottom will need hemmed. For the second curtain, use the bottom half of the cut sheet. Turn over the cut part about three inches, pin, and stitch across to make another rod pocket. (The sides and hem are already done!)

Other choices may be large tablecloths, cotton slipcovers, or lightweight bedspreads. The same principle would be used, except that more measuring and cutting may be required, with the resulting need to finish off all sides and hems. (This is a good option for the kitchen if the tablecloth was originally purchased to fit with the décor anyway!)

After finding suitable fabric, attempt any stain removal and then hold the material up to the window. Occasionally a stain that’s been imperceptible is quite noticeable by window light. If it’s possible to cut off the stain by cutting off a strip of material, do so, and resize any matching curtain being used. If it’s impossible to remove the stain without losing a good bit of the curtain, consider using other material.

Here are two other unique ways to dress up windows: Drape wide strips of material or lace over one or more expandable spring rods, and allow the excess to hang at the sides, for an interesting valance. For small windows, a pillowcase with a ruffle can be used by cutting along one long seam and opening flat with the ruffle as the bottom hem. Directly opposite is what used to be the short seam; fold it over about 3 inches, pin and sew to create the rod pocket, and it’s done! (Don’t worry; when two are hung open to frame the window, what used to be the other long seam won’t be seen.)

Have fun making décor individualistic!
