Glossary of Kitchen Curtain Terms
When it’s time to
pick out kitchen curtains there are a lot of
terms that you will run across.
Here is a list of many of
the terms you will encounter and their
definitions to help make your decisions easier.
Café Curtain – Café curtains cover only
the lower half of the window. They are one piece
of material that covers from one side of the
window to the other. They are ideal for kitchens
because they offer some privacy while allowing
light to still enter the top half of the window.
They are frequently paired with a valance.
Finial – A finial is an ornamental piece
that is put at either end of the rod or pole for
a finishing touch.
Panels – Panels are simply long curtains
that hang from the top of the window down to the
bottom of the window or longer. They are usually
pulled back with a tie back or hold back when
light is needed and closed when privacy is
needed.
Rod or Pole – The rod is a rail that the
curtain is hung on. It can be a simple metal rod
that gets covered completely by the curtains or
a decorative pole that is made of wood, wrought
iron, brass or other decorative material.
Rod Pocket – At the top of a curtain,
there is a “tunnel” like pocket sewn in that the
curtain rod or pole goes through. When choosing
curtains with a rod pocket, be sure that the
pocket is the correct size for the width of the
rod or pole you have chosen.
Tie Back or Hold Back – Tie backs and
hold backs hold the kitchen curtain panels back
to let light in. A tie back is made of fabric. A
hold back is usually made of metal and sometimes
has a finial at the end. It’s attached to the
wall and the curtain is pulled into it to hold
the curtain back.
Tiers – Tiers are two small curtains that
are hung on the bottom half of the window. They
can be pulled to the sides to allow more light
into the kitchen. When closed, they resemble a
café curtain.
Valance – A valance is a curtain that
covers only the top half (or less) of a window.
Valances are used in kitchens frequently because
they are decorative yet still allow a lot of
light to enter.
