Super Simple Sewing Instructions for Kitchen
Curtains
Kitchen curtains
are easier to sew than realized; even a beginner
can make a piece of cloth into an attractive and
functional window covering with minimal effort!
The easiest and cheapest
way is to run an expandable curtain rod through
a pocket of attractive material and squeeze the
rod between the edges of wall surrounding the
window. This process requires measuring the
window, then visiting a discount retailer or
home supplier for the rod and a fabric store for
material. Salesclerks can help!
Material must cover the entire window and
provide excess for folds, sides, and bottom.
With sheer fabric like lace, a much wider piece
will ensure more folds to create an opaque look
while still allowing light to permeate. Heavy
fabrics may not receive adequate support from
the expansion rod and the curtain may slide down
or the rod will bow, so consideration must be
taken.
Hold the material according to the window
shape-either horizontally or vertically. If one
side is darker, that is the “right side” and
should lay face down on the work surface. Flip
the top edge away from work surface about 3
inches and pin 2 ˝ inches down so that a pocket
is formed all along the top edge of the
material. Do the same along the sides and bottom
but with a smaller measure, since these hems
need not be large.
All of the pins should be on the “wrong side” of
the curtain. When a sewing machine is used, lay
material with pins facing up so they can be
removed as material passes under the needle.
Lining up the edge of material with a guide mark
will keep stitching in a straight line. If
sewing by hand, try to keep the “in and out”
motions the same distance from the edge, without
gaps. (If another seam is sewn an inch above the
pocket seam, the pocket will become narrower,
but a ruffle will be created above the rod when
the curtain is hung.) Trim excess material to a
quarter inch past all seams. Ironing may be
avoided by misting curtain with water and
smoothing out wrinkles. Insert expansion rod
through pocket and squeeze rod into place with
the “right side” facing kitchen. Distribute
material evenly along rod to create several
folds. If two curtains are desired, repeat
process, add second curtain to the same rod and
separate at the window’s center!
