Make Your Own Kitchen Curtains To Match Your Room

An inexpensive way to add that little extra something to your kitchen is to make curtains for yourself.

If you have renovated your kitchen, or you are just looking for an inexpensive way to perk up your kitchen, curtains are the perfect solution. An inexpensive way to add that little extra something to your kitchen is to make curtains for yourself. If you are renovating, and cost isn’t the issue, it may still be in your best interest to make your own curtains so that they can exactly match the décor you have chosen.

The first step in making your own kitchen curtains is to measure the window that you will be dressing. Measure both height and width, and take those measurements with you to the fabric store. You will need to purchase more fabric than you need to allow for hems on three sides and the top of the curtain.

Purchasing material—purchase material that suits your needs. If you want heavier curtains, choose a heavier material, but know that your requirements for hanging those curtains will be different than lighter material curtains. If you choose lighter curtain material, you can hang the curtains on a plain rod, essentially sliding the material back and forth on the rod through a sleeve. If you choose heavier material, you will need a more standard curtain rod with a pulley system.

Launder the material before you cut the size you need in order to pre-shrink the material. If you skip this step, your curtains may end up being too small after you wash them the first time.

Cut the material to the size that you have measured, plus an extra five inches in length and four inches in width. Sew a two inch seam down each side of the curtain. Leave the bottom for last.

For simple curtains, sew a ‘sleeve’ of material between two and three inches wide. Sew along the bottom of the materials edge to the main body of the curtain in order to form the sleeve.

Hang the curtains to get the correct length and mark with pins. Sew the bottom hem to the desired length.

It may help to press the material in straight lines for your hems before you sew, in order to get perfectly straight edges. When you have finished constructing the curtains, press them flat and then hang them.
