Gingham Curtains Add Country Charm to Your Kitchen

There is no fabric for kitchen curtains that speaks country more than gingham.

The checkerboard pattern has been long used in traditional country kitchen for close to a century. Gingham is available is a multitude of colors, from the standard red and white, sunshine yellow and even bold colors such as blue and green.

Whether you choose a large checkerboard gingham or a small pattern is entirely up to you. The patterns can be mixed; some kitchens have the bold checked flounces and the smaller checked curtains. Any way you go with gingham curtains, you kitchen will have taken that first step to becoming country.

Gingham kitchen curtains can be purchased or can be made by any one with a small degree of sewing skills. Half the fun of going country with gingham is making the curtains your self. The simplest of curtains do not require a pattern; a fabric tape measure will be the only thing you need besides a sewing machine.

To begin this simple project, your first step is to measure the window, both from top to bottom and from side to side. Add four inches to each measurement to determine how much material you will need. To make tie backs, add another foot and if you desire a flounce top, that will call for another foot of material.

Purchase the material from any good fabric store. With your tape measure, determine if the material, if split in half, is wide enough to cover the width of the window. Be sure to consider at least a quarter inch seam on each side of the fabric.

Cut the fabric to four inches longer than the than the needed length. Turn over a one inch seam on the top and a two inch seam on the bottom. Leave open the sides of the top seam to allow for a curtain rod.

Make tie backs by cutting six inch strips and folding in half. Sew them inside out, leaving one end open to turn. After turning, finish the final seam.

Flounces should be at least four to six inches and can be made in the same way as the curtains.

Once you hang your curtains, your kitchen will immediately take on a country look. Any remaining material can be used to make matching napkins or wrap around a canister for an easy way to tie the look together.
