Cleaning Your Kitchen Curtains

How many times have you scrubbed your kitchen from top to bottom, taking care to make sure that everything is completely spotless and germ-free? How many times have you forgotten about cleaning your kitchen curtains? The fact is many people look over the fact that their kitchen curtains need to be cleaned, as well. Even though the curtains may not exactly look dirty, they are covered with particles and the aroma of what you’ve cooked since the last time they were cleaned.

When you take your kitchen curtains down for cleaning, you will probably be surprised at how dirty they look up close. If you or a family member smokes inside your house, you’ll find the nicotine has built up on the curtains, giving them a yellowish-brown coloring. The fact is nicotine will slowly break down the fabric of your curtains over time and if anyone smokes in the house, your curtains should be cleaned every few months to remove the nicotine. They will probably give off a strong odor of cigarette smoke, so you will notice a big difference in your kitchen when you re-hang the freshly cleaned curtains.

If you have curtains over your kitchen sink, you may find water stains on them. If this is the case, you can soak them in full strength vinegar before you put them into the washing machine to wash. The vinegar will remove the hard water stains, however, you’ll want to thoroughly rinse the vinegar out if you wash them with other curtains or wash them by themselves to prevent the rest of the curtains smelling like vinegar.

When you wash your curtains make sure you check the care instructions of the fabric. Most kitchen curtains are made of fabrics that allow for frequent washings in the washing machine as kitchen curtains tend to get dirtier than the curtains in other rooms. Once they’re in the washing machine, take your time and get your windows sparkling clean. There is nothing worse than putting freshly laundered curtains back on a dirty window. The clean windows and curtains will not only make your kitchen look brighter, it will give off a fresh, clean smell.

If you’ve been one to skip the kitchen curtain cleanings, the time to do so is now. Prolonging the job longer will only increase the risk that your curtains will be permanently stained or damaged from built up particles in the kitchen, such as grease and smoke.
