Kitchen Curtain Source

Information to help you design your own kitchen curtains and help on choosing fabrics and more.

If you are lucky enough to have a window in your kitchen, rejoice! Whether it is a large window or a small one, it adds light and beauty to your kitchen. That said, how should you dress your kitchen window? Curtains? Blinds? Nothing?

The size and location of your kitchen window will help determine the type of window dressing you choose. It is important to select window treatments that are appropriate for the special needs and considerations of a kitchen and its role in the home. For example, it is not a good idea to install light, swishy curtains anywhere near a stove or other open heat source. Think about the summer months, too, when the window might be open and a breeze could move the curtains closer to the stove than they might be when hanging straight down.

Thick, heavy curtains may also be a challenge in the kitchen because they may absorb more of the moisture that is found in any kitchen as a result of steam escaping from dishwashers, steamers, rice cookers, etc., as well as from other sources such as a kettle or pot of boiling water. If too much moisture becomes trapped in the curtain, it could take on a musty odor.

So what is the best kitchen-appropriate style of curtain? You want fire-resistant and mould-resistant material that will enhance, rather than block your window. Simple side panel curtains might work well if you have a built-in plant shelf or anything placed along the bottom of your window. Café-style curtains can add atmosphere for very little cost, and are simple to install. A basic valance may be all the dressing your window needs, particularly if it is framed by cabinets or if it is beside a doorway. Miniature Venetian blinds can be installed quickly for additional privacy when that is needed.

As for patterns and colors, choose a palette you love, as you will likely be looking at those curtains every day. If your kitchen is dark, or has a lot of wood, cheerfully colored curtains can add a much-needed splash of vibrancy to the room. Similarly, a white kitchen might benefit from darker toned curtains for contrast.
